If you are new to kayaking, you might wonder what the difference is between a sea kayak and a recreational kayak. While they may look similar at first glance, they are designed for very different environments and types of paddling.

A recreational kayak is typically shorter, wider, and built for calm water such as lakes, slow-moving rivers, or sheltered bays. They are easy to get in and out of and are great for casual paddling close to shore. Because they are wider and shorter, they tend to be very stable in calm conditions, but they are not designed to handle waves, wind, or long distances very well.

A sea kayak, on the other hand, is specifically designed for ocean environments. Sea kayaks are longer and narrower, which helps them track straight and move efficiently through the water. They also have sealed compartments for buoyancy and storage, as well as a tighter cockpit that allows the paddler more control. These features make sea kayaks much better suited for coastal travel, changing conditions, and longer paddling trips.

Sea kayaks are built with safety in mind for open water. Their design helps them handle waves, wind, and currents more effectively, and the extra storage space makes them ideal for guided tours, touring or multi-day adventures.

At North Island Kayak, we use Seaward sea kayaks, which are designed right here on Vancouver Island specifically for coastal paddling. Their stability, durability, and performance make them perfect for exploring the waters around Telegraph Cove and northern Vancouver Island, giving paddlers the confidence to enjoy the ocean safely.
