North Island Kayak explores the remote island groups of the Broughton Archipelago, and most of the islets have little to no human activity. However, there are two communities in the Archipelago, connected to Vancouver Island through BC Ferries. Among them, the vibrant community of Sointula on Malcolm Island makes for the perfect stop!
Nestled on Malcolm Island in the picturesque region of British Columbia, Canada, lies the charming community of Sointula. With its rich history and abundance of tourism activities, Sointula has become a hidden gem for travelers seeking a unique and immersive experience.
Sointula, which means “place of harmony” in Finnish, was founded in 1901 by a group of Finnish immigrants who sought to create a utopian society based on cooperative principles. Led by the charismatic socialist leader, Matti Kurikka, the settlers established a self-sufficient community focused on equality, cooperation, and sustainable living. Today, Sointula proudly preserves its Finnish heritage, evident in its architecture, cultural events, and the warmth of its residents.
One of the main attractions in Sointula is its fascinating history. Visitors can explore the Sointula Museum, which showcases artifacts and stories from the early days of the settlement. The museum offers a glimpse into the lives of the Finnish pioneers and their vision for a better society. Walking through the streets of Sointula, visitors can admire the well-preserved historic buildings that tell the tale of this unique community.
Beyond its historical significance, Sointula offers a range of tourism activities that cater to nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. The surrounding natural beauty provides ample opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and wildlife spotting. Malcolm Island is known for its diverse marine life, including orcas, seals, and sea lions, making it a popular destination for eco-tourism.
For those seeking a more relaxed experience, Sointula offers tranquil beaches, perfect for picnics and beach strolls. In addition to its natural wonders, Sointula hosts various cultural events throughout the year. The Sointula Winterfestival, held in February, celebrates the community’s Finnish roots with traditional music, dance, and food. The Sointula Art Shed showcases the work of local artists, providing a platform for creativity and expression.
Sointula is a destination that offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and cultural experiences. Whether you are interested in delving into its fascinating past or immersing yourself in the stunning landscapes, Sointula promises an unforgettable journey. Even though our tours do not visit Sointula, Malcolm Island would make a perfect stop when coming to the North Island!
