At North Island Kayak, our love for the wild coastal waters of northern Vancouver Island goes hand in hand with a deep commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible wildlife interaction. For more than three decades, we’ve operated from Telegraph Cove, British Columbia, a gateway to the rich marine ecosystems of Johnstone Strait, Blackfish Sound and the Broughton Archipelago, and we believe that every paddling adventure should leave nature as intact and thriving as when we found it.
Stewardship in Action
We understand that exploring the coastal waters where orcas, humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions and other marine life thrive is a privilege. That’s why we are an active member of the North Island Marine Mammal Stewardship Association (NIMMSA), a group dedicated to ethical wildlife viewing guidelines that minimize disturbance to animals while supporting conservation. Our guides receive specialized training in minimum-impact practices and responsible behaviour on the water so you can watch wildlife in its natural environment without altering its day-to-day life.
Protecting the marine environment is central to who we are. We are proud to be Biosphere Certified, meaning our operations align with internationally recognized sustainability principles and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This certification reflects not just our tours, but our business practices, from reducing plastic waste to encouraging guests to offset their travel emissions and from supporting local conservation efforts to preserving the pristine waters of Telegraph Cove for future generations.
More Than a Tour: A Learning Experience
Kayaking with North Island Kayak isn’t just about adventure; it’s also about education and connection. On every trip, whether a half-day paddle along the sheltered shores or a full day exploring deeper into the strait, our guides share insights into the local ecosystem, cultural heritage and the ongoing efforts to protect the coastal waters you’re kayaking through. These interpretive moments help foster a deeper respect for the extraordinary biodiversity of this region and inspire stewardship far beyond your visit.
Explore in Harmony with Nature
Sea kayaking in British Columbia offers one of the most intimate ways to experience wildlife. Gliding silently at water level through channels known for robust orca populations, you are more likely to feel connected to the rhythms of the natural world than from any motorized vessel. Spending longer on the water, like on our day tours or multi-day adventures, also increases your chances of seeing the region’s iconic wildlife in action, precisely because you are moving thoughtfully and respectfully through their habitat.
At North Island Kayak, responsible kayaking isn’t an afterthought; it’s the foundation of every trip we guide.
