Few places on Vancouver Island are as iconic as Telegraph Cove.
Known around the world for whale watching, sea kayaking, and incredible wildlife viewing, this small coastal community has welcomed visitors to northern Vancouver Island for generations. Following the devastating fire that swept through portions of the community in late 2024, many people have been asking the same question: how is the rebuild progressing?
We are excited to share that significant progress continues to be made!
One of the most visible milestones is that both the North Island Kayak office and the Whale Interpretive Centre now have a roof! For many residents, staff members, and returning visitors, seeing these structures take shape again represents an important step forward in the recovery of Telegraph Cove.
The Whale Interpretive Centre has long served as one of British Columbia’s premier marine education facilities. Housing one of the largest collections of marine mammal skeletons in the province, the centre has inspired countless visitors to learn more about whales, dolphins, and marine conservation. Seeing the building take shape once again is a hopeful sign for the future of marine education in the region.
For North Island Kayak, the recovery process reflects something much larger than rebuilding structures. Telegraph Cove is home to some of the world’s best sea kayaking and wildlife viewing opportunities. It is where guests experience humpback whales, Northern Resident killer whales, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, and countless seabirds in their natural environment. It is also a place where meaningful connections are formed between people and the ocean.
Despite the challenges faced over the past year, visitors continue to experience the same incredible marine ecosystem that has made Telegraph Cove famous. The wildlife remains abundant, the scenery remains spectacular, and the adventures remain unforgettable.
Looking ahead, we are optimistic about the future. Each new milestone demonstrates the commitment of the community to preserving what makes Telegraph Cove special while building a stronger foundation for future generations!!
