There’s something magical about photographing wildlife from a kayak!
Up here in Telegraph Cove, your photo backdrop is old-growth rainforest, and your models are marine wildlife. If you’re looking to capture truly wild moments, here are five of our favourite photo spots near our North Island Kayak base!
1. Johnstone Strait

Just beyond Telegraph Cove lies Johnstone Strait, one of the most famous orca habitats in the world. During the summer months, this is prime territory for Northern Resident killer whales travelling through on their salmon hunt. For photographers, early mornings often bring glassy conditions and soft coastal light, perfect for capturing blows, tail slaps, or a pod travelling together against a forested shoreline.
2. Blackfish Sound

Blackfish Sound is a dynamic stretch of water where currents mix, and marine life thrives! It’s one of the best places to photograph orcas and humpback whales, especially when they’re feeding. Nearby rocky islets are often crowded with Steller sea lions, hauled out in dramatic golden light.
3. The Broughton Archipelago

The maze of islands in the Broughton Archipelago offers endless intimate wildlife moments. Here you’ll often spot harbour seals resting on rocks, sea stars, sea lions, sea otters, and kelp forests swaying just below your hull.
Because you’re travelling at paddle speed, you can stop, set your camera and achieve steady shots without disturbing wildlife.
4. Coastal Forest Edges

The North Island isn’t just about marine wildlife. Look up and you’ll often see bald eagles and seabirds. In the forest, you might also be able to spot bears and deer.
Spring and early summer are ideal for capturing eagle activity, as adults hunt and bring fish back to their nests. A telephoto lens paired with a stable kayak rest can (almost) guarantee stunning wildlife shots!
5. Sunset in Telegraph Cove

Evening paddles near Telegraph Cove offer glowing skies reflected across still water, with seabirds crossing the horizon and the possibility of a distant whale blow.
Sunset tours are a photographer’s dream here. The light is usually just perfect, and the experience is the way to end a day on the water, and often the quietest time to paddle!
